Re: The coffee house circuit

Mike,

I'm not very comfortable with your definitions of "coffee house" and
"restaurant". In the US these licensing issues will be decided on the State
and local level. I would not assume that a coffee house does not require the
licenses and inspections of a restaurant.
I'm also not sure about building a repertoire out of public domain songs.
Copyrighted material goes back a long way. Unless you think that there is a
market for a lot of Bach and Tarrega I not sure this will work. I play both
Summertime and Bicycle Built for Two, old songs but still under copyright.
Finally, if they don't have the bucks for a liquor license, or a
restaurant license, or a performance license, then why do you think they'll
have the bucks for you?
Sorry to be so negative but I don't know anyone who has bought a house
and raised a familly on the "pass the hat" money that I think you will be
offered. They will give you free coffee usually.

Dave,

This isn't a pro site, so most of us are not dependent on the $ a
coffeehouse gig would pay, but is a great venue for getting
performance experience. Most coffeehouses do not prepare food, but
sell preprepared, which is a different level of licensing.

Think Starbucks, they have vendors for all their goodies, and
basically have the beverage thing. That is kind of the line around
here, though some coffeeshops here serve food, but they are cafes.

As you say, a topic for local municipalities to sort out.

BTW, if anyone is interested, here is a good site for PD info.
