I bought a new guitar last week and have been practicing chords. I practice
on and off each day in short sessions because my fingertips hurt like hell.
Anyway, I bought some books on chords and there are enless ones to learn.
I'd like to eventually play along with my favorite types of music, mainly
60's and 70's pop and rock.

Given this, which chords should I concentrate on learning first as a
starting base? So far, i have the following down:
C,D,E,A,G
Em, E7, Dm, Am, A7,

I've asked a few people and get differing answers.
I heard the following:
1) learn 21 chords - The major, minor and dominate 7th
2) learn all major, minor, 7th, aug, sus, minor7th, dim 7th (wow)
3) Learn CDEAG, d7th of these and Dm,Em,Am (Add other chords as needed for
a particular song).

Thanks, John

Thanks for the info. I did find some 60s song chords and looks like I need
to learn some Bs, Fs and aug/sus chords too. I see I need to know some
sharps. Oddly, these aren't included in my chord guides. Is there a good
free software that shows the chord fingerings? I recall seeing one years ago
that let you select a chord and would even play through the speakers so you
could hear if your getting the notes right.

For now, I plan to learn the basic chords, learn how to change cords better
and learn some basic songs.
Next I'd like to learn some music theory and maybe take a guitar class.

Thanks, John

Get a book that show the songs and how to play the cords - ie: EZ
Guitar for beginners, let er rip - plenty of time to go deeper later
after you get hooked! Ed S.
