<Gerard_Verhoef@xxxxxxxxxxx> did courageously avow:
If you talk about quality differences on more or less mass produced
goods you can usually pin point what the differences are and what
exactly one manufacturer has to change to get goods of the same quality
en even identical as the other guy?
Say you build bikes (not motor bikes I mean), then there are relatively
few variables to take into account. The measures, the kinda stuf the
components are made of an that's more or less it. Unless you cannot weld
a frame well enough or other craftsmen like things.
I guess a guitar is about as complex as a bike is. Not too many
components, no futuristic techniques (with bikes there are, btw), no
"secrets" you cannot find out by taking apart the product and analyzing it.
Then why is it impossible to make say a Martin D-28 that's equally good
for less then half the price. Or, why aren't there other manufacturers
who produce a dreadnut that is perhaps not an exact copy, but sounds and
plays just as good.
What is so damned difficult about making a quality guitar?
Gerard
I think the reason this may not be possible is that the number of
variables required to properly assess each part, its material
composition, its placement and its overall influence in the final
instrument is not something that is readily quantifiable in terms of a
machine's needs for making decisions at this higher level. Though
costly, the advantage of using human craftsmanship is that the true
craftsperson becomes a part of the instrument they are building and
are constantly performing these assessments in the context of building
instruments that stand apart from a mass produced instrument.
