So what is the rule of thumb? For a Maj chord,
do you play the min pent for ANY of the chords
or extensions?
Well, I thought I explained the rules of thumb above. If playing on a
maj chord you can use the 3rd, 6th, and 7th of that chord and their
minor pent shapes as subs. I listed out the examples and the
extensions you get above.
It's a little too scale oriented for me personally,
but I'm interested in how you use the theory. ie when
playing in XMaj how does one quickly decide "I can use
the ymin pent scale"?
Agreed, and I REALLY am trying to get away from totally scale based
approaches, and have been marinating in arpeggios the past couple of
years. You could look at them as arps if you prefer. I see them as
functioning that way.
As far as how I employ them, it is the same as with arp subs. I know
I can use an Eminor 7 arp over a Cmaj7 chord, which yields a Cmaj9
tonality, which is what Nil is talking about.
My whole point in this was to assist Tony and most of us who live/or
have lived in minor/major pent land for so long. By subbing out a
bit, diatonically, we can breathe some new life into our tired old
patterns.
I apologize for not being able to communicate as clearly as needed,
but hopefully this helps some. These patterns are so ingrained use
them in new ways rather than learn a bunch of new patterns.
I am still messing with them, especially the altered dominant shapes,
as I tend to gravitate toward my tired old diminished and super
locrian licks. Mainly, because I am not as comfortable with them.
