I visited one of my favourite music shops a couple of days ago. Though
it was time to replace the very old valves in my Peavey Classic 20,
boy does it sound better now! Anyway, while I was there I picked up a
Marshall ED-1 compressor. I've been using the compressor set up with
full attack but only a little compression, to smooth out my attempts
at playing finger style and hybred picking jazz guitar. Wow what an
improvement in the overall sound of my playing.
I feel this is a cheat and I should really work on my right hand
technique to get my sound more even but, the sound produced using the
compressor is just so nice I think I'll soon get over my guilt ;-)
Does anyone have any tips for using a compressor. I know they are
often used to increase sustain and are usually put before most other
boxes but that's about it.

P.S. If you've had the same valves in your amp for more than 15 years,
you may be pleasently surprised by how much better new valve sound :-)
I use a compressor very lightly, and only switch it on if I feel I'm not
getting into the mix. It is a good home-made one, with only two knobs,
effect level and output level, but it is switchable between Dynacomp and
Ross modes. I like it a lot. I use delay in the same way, very sparingly to
add a little body.
