You don't need a lot of lessons to get you started, especially if you practise a lot in between lessons. Talk to a teacher about what you want to learn (style, what kind of songs, instrumental or accompaniment, etc) and ask about a lesson once a month that will cram in lots of things for you to practise until the next lesson. You will make much faster progress having a teacher show you the basics than you would on your own.

Failing that, find a good video course; but these can be expensive, too.

Some of Mike Herbert's teaching videos are quite good and fairly cheap to buy one at a time, teaching you specific songs.
