Your quarter note gets one count per beat:
One two three four one two three four....

Eighth notes get two counts per beat:
One and two and three and four and one and two and three and four...

Triplets get three counts per beat:
One and ah two and ah three and ah four and ah one and ah...

When done slowly triplets have a waltz kind of feel.

In fact most modern metronomes should have a triplet setting. Practice
with that for a bit and once you get the feel for it it'll be locked
into your brain for ever.
