Re: Dylan song for complete beginner?

Nil, I just screwed up, period. See my response to Greg Cisko.-- Rich

Good response with the exception that the proper chord is "A" not
"Am".

I don't think so. The C# in the A major chord conflicts with the C
natural in the melody.

I just listened to a couple versions of it. The one on Greatest Hits 1
is in the key of F, played as if it's in D but capoed at the 3rd fret.
He briefly hits a low G bass note, which implies (notated in D:)

G A D G
Hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me
D G Em A
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
G A D G
Hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me
D G Em A D
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

So, in the key of your example, it would be Am. You can hear it here:

In the rendition from the Concert for Bangladesh, it's in E, capoed at
the 2nd fret. Here, the bassline implies something a little different
(notated in D:)

G A D G
Hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me
D G D/F# A
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
G A D G
Hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me
D G D/F# A D
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

You can hear this one here:

So my rigorous scientific study shows that Dylan doesn't always play it
the same. I'd say whatever sounds good and compliments the melody would
be OK.
