Hi g_man. Could you give us some idea of what kind of music you'd
like to be able to play ? I'm sure you would get back some good
advice as to how to go about getting there. Guitar playing is so
vast that if you just tell yourself you want to learn to play
guitar you won't know where to start.

I've been practicing for two years now and the first year and a half
was spent, without my realizing it, in figuring out what I want to
be able to do on a guitar. I believe that any kind of practice is
good but only once you've defined the type of music you want to play
do things really start moving.

Instead of learning scales I think you'd do better if you got hold
of the *** music for some examples of whatever music you like and
learn to play that. Note by note or chord by chord depending on
what style you pick. Once you're able to play pieces that you like
you can start to look at things like what scales are used in them
and why, what the chord progressions are an why. You can then start
to think about creating your own music if you're so inclined.

If you're into popular music, rock, blues and the like, there are
several books by Rikky Rooksby that I've found helpful. See :

I'm sure you can become as good a guitar player as you wish as long
as you're willing to put in the hours (and hours, and hours).
