Larry,
I think the G&L ASAT is a much better guitar than the Fender. Also,
the Tribute version, MIK (how'd I do Guncho?) is an excellent value,
and better than the Fender at that price point.
If you are interested in a nice quality instrument, then Don Grosh,
Tom Anderson and make much better (imo) tele guitars than current
Fenders. Don't forget the Valley Arts Brent Mason model. That said,
older Fenders are wonderful, and newer ones are fine.
Rather than improve their product, Fender just bundles different
options, and gives it a new model name. Don't get me wrong, I like
Fender just fine, and have owned a number of them over the years, and
still have a MIA (that's US) Strat.
