David,

I believe you are misinformed if you think Saudi is responisible for
Islam. You need to look a little further back. However, as a whole,
aside from Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam, aka Steven Demetre Georgiou),
Islam has not produced many notable guitar players.

Hi Derek;

Interesting to note, essentially to the contrary; it is not impossible to
trace linkages from early middle-eastern Ouds (some even with frets) through
European lutes and guitars.

Also interesting to note; we received our now indispensable zero digit from
the Arabs, meaning medieval period Islamic mathematicians, who I do suspect
for delivering this gift. This guitarist at least, has made much hay from
nothing (and all things). I now believe that if we-all were to gently,
gracefully, and with all-due gratitude, hand zero _back_ to the Muslims, it
and it's influence and benefits having now traveled round the world, if we
were to return zero to it's lofty perch high atop a minaret, maybe even one
now disguised amid some later fashioned Cathedral (15th/16th century
Spanish, try Toledo: http://www.wsu.edu:8001/~wldciv/tours/spain/tol10.jpg
), nestled, held, and supported comfortably in it's long awaiting "crescent
moon" cradle, returned once-again home, well then I think we all might-could
have a happy ending/beginning after all.

Let us pray -- we dally not.
Work to do, much to do. Forget our home-dot [0] not.
With or without it, we are naught.
But three dots make continue-ed . . .

P.S. a wiki-check says:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0_(number)#History_of_zero

.. . "The Hindu numeral system(base 10) reached Europe in the 11th century,
via the Iberian Peninsula through Spanish Muslims the Moors, together with
knowledge of astronomy and instruments like the astrolabe, first imported by
Gerbert of Aurillac. So in Europe they came to be known as "Arabic
numerals". The Italian mathematician Fibonacci or Leonardo of Pisa was
instrumental in bringing the system into European mathematics in 1202. . "
