Yes the mute and open notes are not on the conventional side but I don't
think he's fretting the high e at the first fret. I think he's fretting

You are probably right - but it actually works either way - and it's
should be obvious that it's EADGBe 'cause who would paly chords that
voiced the low E and muted the open B & e
.
