I can certainly understand what you are describing Pat. I think it is
much easier to overplay in a group context. If the guy is used to
playing solo, then time and overplaying are going to be issues.

The easy thing to do would be agree ahead of time what parts each will
play. I have posted here before that I enjoy looking for sonic turf
that isn't being covered when playing in a band.

I do this pretty regularly, and it has really helped my ear, and
developed other parts of my playing like triads on the upper strings,
octaves, and rhythmic things like funk or reagge sort of stuff.
