I don't think one necessarily needs heavier strings.

I tune down 1/2 step on a Guild acoustic (Darco strings -- light
gauge 80/20 bronze wound) without any problem.

It sounds fine to my ears...

And I've heard that many grunge metal bands tune down 3 semitones.
