Here's my write-up from another group I posted a review to...Squires are great guitars for the money, and the necks are awesome. I
I'm not starting back buying gear, but I had a credit on my MF card for
months, maybe longer. Had forgotten about it until my bill arrived this
month to remind me that they owed *me* money. Poked around MF for a
couple of weeks as I didn't want to spend more than my credit. Last
week ran across this:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Squier-51-Electric-Guitar?sku=519636
It's a Squier '51 - basswood Strat body with maple Tele neck; single
coil in the neck; humbucker with coil tap in the bridge.
It doesn't yield Strat sounds such as the quack you get in positions 2
& 4, but it does yield typical Tele tones except with the bridge
humbuck fully engaged, a heavier tone that's nice for OD tone.
There's no tone control per se as it's a rotary control to engage one
or both pups, but the tone changes pretty dramatically in each of the 3
positions. The volume control also functions as the push-pull coil tap.
I wouldn't use this as a jazz guitar unless I was realy into Teles, but
as a rock/blues guitar, it's pretty nice. Really easy to play; neck
feels good; good fit & finish; plays in tune up and down the neck;
tuners seem decent. I got the TV yellow finish, btw.
$99 delivered is a good deal for this guitar.
=====================
Update: restrung with D'Add 11 rounds with a wound 3rd. Tightened down
the tuner nuts, stretched the strings real good and reintonated... very
nice - plays in tune near perfectly most everywhere. I could have
easily used this guitar to gig in my ex-band had I not been so
anti-solid body at the time.
I recorded 4 sample tracks off my Princeton chorus amp
1. http://members.cox.net/digiorgiogr/ebay/511.mp3 - clean, no effects;
guitar neck/bridge pup
2. http://members.cox.net/digiorgiogr/ebay/512.mp3 - clean, no effects.
guitar neck pup
3. http://members.cox.net/digiorgiogr/ebay/513.mp3 - bridge pup for
rhythm; bridge pup with a little OD for the lead
4. http://members.cox.net/digiorgiogr/ebay/514.mp3 - all OD for bridge
pup off the amp
Greg
recently got that butterscotch blonde Tele and mixed and matched the parts
with an MIM Tele. Still, the stock squire guitar was pretty damn nice.
