Hi,
I'm a beginning player, and I'm trying to determine if there is
anything I can do during the time when I'm not around my guitar to
build calluses. I read about an item that can be found at rock
climbing stores (though I've gone to some and no one has heard of it).
It looks like a coin, a little smaller than the palm of your hand. It
is metal and has concentric metal ridges on it. Supposedly you put
your thumb on one side and squeeze your fingertips over the ridges on
the other side.
Has anyone heard of this? If so, how can I get one?
Also, any other tips for building long-lasting calluses? I realize the
convential wisdom is to just suck it up and play and they will come
with time. But I'd like to hasten that process if possible. Thanks!
Even if you use something else to callous the fingers, it will still
not make your fingertips tougher. Yeah, you'll have a layer of
callousing, but when you fret for a long time you'll still get an ache
in your fingertips. This is something that can only be helped by just
playing. Play a cheap acoustic guitar with high action and heavy
strings. After your done playing, look at your fingertips and you'll
see actual dents where you've been fretting the string. Nothing but a
guitar string will start making your fingers adapt to that. Stick
with a lot of chords and scales on an acoustic to toughen up quicker
if you've been mostly playing electric. If you are just playing an
acoustic now, only time will really help your fingers adapt
.
