The wood blocks does sound like a good idea, but I agree - it'd be
tough to get the strings tight.
Hmmm.. I don't give up easily. Here's an idea that
you might try:
Clamp your strings on one end with a simple wood
screw and washer (strings wrapped a few times
around those screws). That should anchor one
end firmly (use hardwood for the screw end
blocks).
On the other end, use wood screws that you drill
little holes in (for you guessed it - strings).
Thread the screws part way into the block
(maybe half or 3/4 of the way). Then thread
the string through the screw hole, and tighten
such that you have 3-4 turns of wire around
the exposed shaft of the screw.
Tighten to pitch (ok- I mean just "tight").
If the strings keep coming loose, put another
row of screw+washer pair to clamp down the
tightened end. That should hold it in place,
with the drilled screws only being used for
the tightening business.
If this works, I should patent it. ;-)
I would use a Robertson screw head, since
you will need quite a bit of torque on
those screws for this. A Philips or slotted
screw will just be a waste of time.
Warren.
