Also, any other tips for building long-lasting calluses? I realize the
convential wisdom is to just suck it up and play and they will come

I have to go with the suck it up and play method. That is what I did.
Now, 28 years later I do not have calluses. I can play all I want, my
finger tips are just used to it.
When I was just starting in the late '70 & early '80's it was not
pretty. At that time I did have calluses. I would be wearing a
groove through the hard callus skin. Eventually it would get to
the point where they may bleed. Or the string would get stuck
in the groove momentarily. Now I do not pay it any attention.
