YES..
and
NO.
do what Lumpy sez - learn SONGS - THAT will be the MOST PRACTICAL.
as far as exercises, i THINK a good approach is the "form" approach:
a triad has 3 notes in it - a chord can have any ONE of those three
notes on top, which causes the note to be heard as the "melody".
hence, the THREE forms.
Form 1 has the chord voiced 1-3-5-1, from bottom to top. EXAMPLE
:(commonly known as the "open" C chord)
Form 2 has the 3 on top - it's stacked up 1-5-1-3 - -commonly seen as
the "A" chord - has a small barre in it.
Form 3 has the 5 on top - voiced 1-1-3-5 - not real practical in that
variation, but is the one known as "THE" barre chord.
as far as a practical exercise - play from the lowest available form on
the neck, and work your way up (toward you)
example: open c - form II - then form III.
work your way around the circle of keys
insert the relative minors between the keys.
you will find that - when playing SONGS like Lumpy says, that it gets
to be real natural to pick a different chord FORM, not a different
chord, and another also - giving you some VARIETY during a chord that
you may overlook otherwise.
that may sound rather insignificant - however - well, get a coupla
tunes goin first....
the relative minor between gives you the sequence C-Am-F-Dm-Bb-Gm, etc
etc. (just follow the pattern)
