Play the damn thing!!!

I love to talk gear as much as the next guy but sometimes I think us
guitarists spend way too much time becomeing gearheads and not enough time
using the TOOLS to create MUSIC. Most of the greats (or at least the ones I
have read about) learned on crappy instruments. It does not matter what you
play as long as it is playable. You can learn on it. The natural progression
is to recognize the shortcomings of some of the beginner guitars and want
better gear but you might be amazed at some of the guitars that some pros
piddle around withat home. A friend of mine who played with one of the great
music legends picks around on an old cheap Japanese Yamaha acoustic. Yeh, he
has the Martins and the Custom Shop Fender Strats but they are for recording
and gigging. That old Yamaha is his main squeeze. If you talk guitars with
him he is all about talking about cool riffs, progressions, throwing a
mixolydian lick in a pentatonic minor solo for flavor, switching from the
scale to a chord tone lick, etc... If you try to talk gear with him it does
not last long. And I think that is why he makes a living playing guitar.
Gear can be bought, sold, replaced, and upgraded all day long. The ability
to play and jam with conviction and feel is something that only comes with
immersing yourself in the art of playing. Not the gear.
And I'm guilty of it also. Sometimes I am too much of a gear head. I'm going
to try to change my evil ways :)
