Current IRS deduction for vehicle wear and tear,
fuel etc is about 50c per mile. So
a 100 mile trip for IRS purposes is $50.
That leaves each person $50. I'm not sure
if that 100 miles is one way or round trip.
If it's round trip, you have another $50
to work with.
Now if you have absolutly no other expenses,
not likely, but let's figure it that way,
you've earned $50.
I think "I made $50" is a lot different than
"We made $500".
I don't think you need to lecture PT
or anyone else about playing
under any circumstances.
I think it DOES indeed need pointing out.
You don't seem to get it. Pt, deliberately
or otherwise, made it sound pretty glamorous. As if he
was making $500 for a simple evening of jamming.
When in real life he's making less than he'd
make at MacDonalds and highly likely much, much less.
To me the importance of PT's post is that he
found himself in a situation with people he
liked to play with, and the club enjoyed it
as well...
Then he should have said "Hey I'm playing a
gig that I enjoy. I don't really care that
it doesn't pay much".
To me the importance of Pt's post is it misleads
those not familiar with playing out, into thinking
that you make a lot of money doing it.
He makes a few bucks. Not top dollars,
but not a loss by any stretch,
just speaking financially...
And that, in my professional opinion, is not correct.
$100 for a job that takes several hours out of your day,
asks you to use several thousand dollars of your equipment,
and asks you to drive 100 (or maybe 200) miles, is a loss.
And as I've REPEATEDLY stated, if YOU want to do that,
that's absolutely fine. But it's misleading if the costs
are NOT pointed out.
If you don't like the "paint my house" analogy, that's
too bad. Pick any skill you like. Do it for a living,
to support your family or do it for fun, and lose
money on it, like a hobby, as you suggest. But don't
come here and tease people with "We're making five bills."
And there's a lot more chance of a future in which
the money is better for PT in this situation than
there would be if he had said. oh well
not enough cash for me...
Now you're sounding like one of those club owners.
"Future in which the money is better?" bull***.
Absolute, plain, stinky bull***. The one making
money here is the bar owner. To assume otherwise
is just plain incorrect. You think that club owner
is going to raise their pay to a point where it
is anything like that of his waiters and bartenders?
Not gonna happen.
The 500 certainly covered expenses,
pardon me repeating that but it
seemed to not sink in...
No, Twang, it doesn't seem to be sinking in.
Go gather a group of 4 guitarists,
one bass player, a drummer, and several
thousand dollars worth of equipment. Drive
100 miles, spend 8-10 or more hours doing
your thing, and bring home $100. You'll
be wealthy in no time.
