Why do you need to play barre chords?
Because I like guitar and it is part of guitar technique.
First off - it's just one technique - you don't need to hold barre
chords to play and write music - but you will need to know some theory
so that you can transpose to "open" keys, or know how to build chords
so that you can find other ways to hold chords other than via barre -
or just buy the Mel Bay guitar chord book
secondly - have you taken your guitar into a music shop to have them
check the action - high action on an acoustic friggin hurts
next - are you talking acoustic or electric - if you don't even have
enough strength to barre an A major at the 5th fret on an electric -
then there's something physically wrong with you and you will never be
able to play guitar - become a bassist instead - rhythm players are a
dime a dozen - but bass players are usually in demand.
