Nevertheless, I think the melody of a tune need not be exclusively one
or the other, a song can certainly contain a fusion of sadness and of
harmony. The melody should reflect the mood the performer was in when
he composed the tune, I agree that the guitar is a great vehicle of
expressing oneself - expression, to me, is far more important than just
shredding away to demonstrate speed.
You might want to compare mixolidian and dorian. A few of the blues artists throw dorian in there too.
