he asked which would improve the sound. The answer is, it depends. To
give the best correct answer, one would need much more information from
the OP in terms of just exactly what he plans to do.
Okay, this is difficult to answer, as I have not played for long and
don't know where I will be in years time. In the short term I would
like to just keep playing learning in my study room without disturbing
the wife / neighbours / baby. I tend to play a bit early in the
morning and late at night every day (work stopping me in the time in
between), so I suppose I do spend a lot of time with headphones.
Right now, I am happy with the clean sound I get from my practise amp
(through headphones and without), but cannot stand the distortion. When
I go to my guitar class once a week, I get a chance to plug into a
bigger amp, which sounds much better.
So I guess, what I mainly want is to add nice sounding distortion to my
existing setup.
I would also like to record myself, but mainly for learning purposes,
so I am not to bothered wether it is through the line out of an amp or
through a Pod or similar.
In the near future I would also like to be able to go round to my
friends house and jam with him (a keyboard player) and another friend
(a guitarist). The keyboard player has a simple home studio set up, so
there would probably be something to plug the Pod in. It would of
course also be possible to use my amp there.
I apologise, I this sounds different from what I described in my
initial post, but this thread has made me think a little more about
what I actually want to do and get out of the gear.
Don't apologize. The dialog is to help you brainstorm ideas about what it is you want to do. That will obviously change over time and as you discover new information.
The most important thing is that you learn and have fun doing it.
Peace
