That argument supports your opponents point. The notion that after
experimenting with the POD he would have some idea of the differences
between those set ups, and many others, will only help him make
decisions down the road as his playing improves, tastes change and
budget increases.

Yes, the POD at least can emulate cabinets like that but to base a
decision based on what you hear you would have to trust that emulation.
You would also have to keep in mind that the emulation emulates
hearing that cabinet through a mic placed in a room of configuration
XYZ and ambiance Q at angle A at distance D with the speakers placed in
location XY...that isn't what you would hear if it was right in the
room with you.
