I play bluegrass classical and fingerstyle I seldom have to hold full barre
chords so I have other issues.

The thumb is not necessary for the little finger to apply the required
pressure it is just there to control the hand position. Try it without
thumb on the neck.
Sometimes I use my palm to squeeze instead of my thumb. I also
change from barres to 2 string power chords if I notice things
start to feel funny. So instead of an A (E shape) barre chord on
the 5th fret. I will just play the A and D strings fretted on the 7th
fret. Stuff like that. It does not sound as full but it saves the wear
and tear on your tendons. I like to think of it as combat tactics :-)
