Or if you have a favorite lick that works for an A minor chord for
example, learn how to change it to fit an A major, and an A7 chord too.
Usually you just need to change one (or two) notes.

Well OK this does it. I must officially suck at playing leads.
I never consiously do only specific licks like this to fit chords
that happen to be playing at the time. In fact I think I find it
limiting that people would use this method. I don't know as
I have never really considered people would do this. But
holy CRAP!

I will have to contemplate for a moment ;-) Silence please...

One good lick can go a long way.

You can also just 'alter' the minor pentatonic scale to fit. E.g. Aminor
pent.. change the C note to a C# and all your licks will now work over an
A7 chord.

Heavy Metal tip of the week: If the song is in the key of A, just
do the minor pent key of A and don't consider the chords ;-)
There is more to lead than simply playing the rigid notes in the
scale. There is feel which contributes to tone and contributes
to whether you can play a lead properly in key or not.

Some may remember I recently asked here what key "Sunshine
of your love" was in. My band is playing it, and I was struggling
in the obvious key of D. Well next thing I know, it is no problem
at all playing it in the minor pent key of D.
