I'm curious; if you were a lead guitarist, what did you base your leads on
if not scale patterns? Most solos have some kind of cadence, so how can one
play lead without applying some kind of structure, or basing it around a
particular position on the fret board (eg any of the "five pentatonic
shapes"). Do you consider arpeggios as scale patterns? How do you write
your solos/leads/riffs?

Here's my response. I've taken lessons for several months. The majority

these weekly lessons consists of him giving me a scale pattern to
practice.
We've covered the major scale, the major pentatonic scale and now we're
on
the blues scale. The only music theory we've covered is the circle of
fifths. He showed me that so I would know what key to solo in using the
major pentatonic scale. Now...here's the thing. I could have taught
myself
all this with a cheap book on scales and a book on basic music theory. I
could have saved myself hundreds of dollars!!! So, based on my own
experience, I'm thinking self-taught is the way to go. You just have to
be
disciplined to memorize scale patterns. I'm seriously considering
dropping
the lessons, but have made no such decision yet. What are your thoughts
based on your own experiences with an instructor or without one
(self-taught)?

SO after all these hundreds of dollars in lessons, what can you play?
Scale patterns? Whoohoo!

I hear scale patterns are really rocking the airwaves.

I was the lead guitarist in bands for years and I don't know any scale
patterns.
