Re: Self-Taught or Instructor
Which do you think is the best way to learn to play guitar? Self-taught or with an instructor.
I had the same thoughts and reasoning you did and found a balance. You
should go the path of teaching yourself and find some people to play
with. But still have an instructor who'll just answer questions and
analysis your playing to suggest where you need improvement or growth.
If your instructor can't do this, then maybe he sucks and needs to
follow the basic teaching program that the music store setups for him.
Ditch him and find someone else.
Oh, you'll never run out of questions or not need good analysis of your
playing. You may however out grow your instructor if his answers and
analysis grow stale. Just move on, or if your lucky, some of the guys
you jam with answer all your questions and gave you the analysis you
need.
As far as basic music theory, go take a class at a local community
college instead of wasting your guitar lessons. It's a different
discipline and once you're done, you can reference guitar books to see
how it relates to the guitar.
