Self-Taught or Instructor

Which do you think is the best way to learn to play guitar? Self-taught or
with an instructor.

Here's my response. I've taken lessons for several months. The majority of
these weekly lessons consists of him giving me a scale pattern to practice.
We've covered the major scale, the major pentatonic scale and now we're on
the blues scale. The only music theory we've covered is the circle of
fifths. He showed me that so I would know what key to solo in using the
major pentatonic scale. Now...here's the thing. I could have taught myself
all this with a cheap book on scales and a book on basic music theory. I
could have saved myself hundreds of dollars!!! So, based on my own
experience, I'm thinking self-taught is the way to go. You just have to be
disciplined to memorize scale patterns. I'm seriously considering dropping
the lessons, but have made no such decision yet. What are your thoughts
based on your own experiences with an instructor or without one
(self-taught)?
