OK here you go. Pay attention please :-)
A 50W tube amp puts out as much relative output (volume as
heard on something like a 4x12 bottom) as a 100W solid state
amp. This has been the accepted comparison for as long as I
can remember (starting in 1979). This is so accepted, it is not
even worth any attempt at a debate. So if anyone wants to go
back and forth about it, I am not interested :-)
The interesting thing though, is when people compare the
50W & 100W Marshall JCM 800 heads, the main difference
people focus on is not the volume. It is that the 100W head
sounds more harsh and the 50W is much warmer sounding.
I had a JMP Mk2 100 watter that was the loudest amp I ever used.
Much louder than my 50 watter.
But when I pushed that 100 watts it was pure plexi sounding.
