By front I just meant the fingerboard side of the neck.

I have eyeballed the relief when I fret the low e string at the first

a medium Fender pick as someone suggested I check so perhaps it is OK.

Cool. Well Tony's already given you great advice on that...I don't
personally slacken the strings to make small adjustment because I like
to adjust for the current tension, let it settle then tune up and
measure, but I don't see that it would be harmful, you'd just have to
tune up right after you make the adjustment (to bring it back up to the
proper tension area)...then, as usual, you'll have to tune it again
after it has had time to settle. In any event for more in general on
maintenaince issues, follow the link below and consider buying the
CD...if only to support Frank's incredible diary :-)

Look under the "instrument setup".

The truss rod is typically 8 or 10/32 thread, not too fine...which is
why a quarter turn is considered big. Loosening it is certainly a safe
operation...if it isn't, then something was really wrong to begin with.
Anyway, given that they seldom get this treatment, a little oil on the
nut may save it from one day refusing to move smoothly, causing you to
force it, causing damage to the rod, causing you to swear and causing
your wallet to get lighter than air...it's a matter of reducing the
friction, and protecting the mechanism from corrosion. For instance, if
you leave your axe in the car in the winter, you may get a little frost
build up in the truss rod cavity, of course, when it melts, it can
eventually oxidize the metal...so, if it is accessible, it is a good
idea to give it a quick drop. Anyway, check out Frank Ford's page on
truss rod adjustment..

All the best, CS
