I try to play along with a few of the sonds I'm learning. While what
I'm doing is much simplified, it still fits... Only problem - the tunes
are mostly on my laptop, and it doesn't have much in the way of volume.
I don't need anything horrendously loud - as the parents/neighbours
would kill me, but I'm virtually having to play with my guitar
unplugged, which seems to defeat part of the point of an electric.
The amp DOES have an input socket (other than that for the guitar)
labelled 'CD in and emulated line out' - is there any way I can
connect the laptop to the amp at the same time as the guitar, and play
along that way?
I'm thinking my laptop doesn't have the right sockets - it has a
headphone jack, a TV out and usb ports...
If that doesn't work - any other suggestions?
Plug the 'headphone out' jack on your computer into the CD socket of your
amp.
Alternatively you can buy a gadget called a 'USB audio interface', I think
Thomann do one for less than twenty quid and it gives you 'line level' in
and out via a USB port.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.
