I wish I had your time. I'm not fast, but here are a few things that
help me play faster.

1. If you get "flying fingers" at higher speed - Think about pressing
down the note only, not releasing the note you just played. You'll
find that your fingers will automatically release the previous note
with minimual effort. This was my biggest problem.

Thanks for the tip. I don't think it will be something I come up against for
a while, but it's great to get these things to watch out for as I progress.

2. I find that many short practices work better a long one.

If you get bored of playing scales(I can't touch the stuff), just play
some easier solos first and work your way up.

I think I have been doing similar stuff to this already, in that I may
practice scales etc for 10 to 15 mins and then switch to playing some scale
based riffs for a similar period of time. I find I often return to the
scales and find them easier as a result.

Afterall, you said you
didn't want to create your own solols anyways. Here are some
pseudo-shred stuff that sound cool, but don't require as much speed and
technique as a RacerX solo.
1. Old Maiden solos are not difficult. Murry's solos are especially
cool. Most of the speed is from hammer-on and pull offs.

Excellent. Would you have any suggestions off the top of your head? Anything
apart from the NOTB album, as while I know it's sacrilege, I just don't
'get' that album myself.

2. Dave Mustaine's(Megadeth) solos are cool too. He just speeds up
some blues riffs, then does a cromatic climb. If you see any complex
techniques, then it's the other guy's part.

LOL ... cool ... I'll keep that in mind.

3. Old Slayer stuff is just running down a scale and yanking the whammy
bars. I never bother learning their stuff note for note, cause it's
just a bunch of noise really.

LOL .... nicely put ... :)

4. Alex Lifeson(Rush) has got some pseudo shredding now and then, and
it always sounds good.

I've been meaning to check out Rush for some time. Thanks.

5. Exodus's Force of Habit album has some fun solos. It's almost not
metal.

Sounds good. I love their last album. Real old school thrash. I'll try and
get my hands on 'Force of Habit' as you suggest.

6. My personal favorite is Dimebag. No scales required here. Just
follow his fret board patterns.

DD was a true legend. His riffs are awesome and his solo work was highly
individual. I might try some of his stuff in the future.

7. Satch stuff from the Extremist. He doesn't shred as much as the
Alien album, and you can actually play through some of the stuff. You
also get the bonus of have a few technical stuff in the mix now and
then, but all very tastefully done.

Cool. I love Alien, but it is pretty advanced for the most part (although
you've reminded me to start practicing 'Midnight again'. I used to be able
to do a recogniseable version of that years ago) I think I have tabs for the
Extremist somewhere so I'll keep them in mind.

3. Try getting powertabs and playing along with your favoriate
shredders at half speed while the tabs are on the screen. I even found
some Jason Becker stuff online. Very cool.

I have GuitarPro5 which I think is much the same as Powertabs, is it not?
I've already started to try and play tabs at slower speeds and it's
definitely helping me practice.

Who is Jason Becker though? I know I could google him, but I'd like to hear
why you rate his stuff.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. It's been very helpful.

Phil
