I hear the same thing. And I'm sure parents
of the people that were contemporaries of
Beethoven said "That damn Beethoven crap
you kids listen to". My grandparents probably
thought Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman was
the "crap" that my parents listened to.

It's a little different when we're discussing
listeners that simply don't care for a
particular style. I don't care for rap.
Nor do I care for opera. But I don't discount
that it's music.

But the form of elitism I'm talking about
is from other musicians. "My style/substyle/
microsubstyle is the epitome of my instrument".

Miles Davis spit on the audience because he
thought they were not worthy of his playing.
THAT kind of elitism is a pathological problem.
Those kind of musicians have long ago gone past
the point where they are "playing" their instrument.
