I recall reading a story about a guitar player who was in WWII.
He did not have a guitar but he wanted to prcatice to keep in shape.
He made a guitar neck out of a piece of wood and put some sort of
frets on it.
He fingered chords on it as often as possible.
When he returned from the war 5 years later he was able to get right
back to playing in bands.
Yes, it is best to learn to play chords as a group.
Once you know how the hold the chords you can do it on anything.
The more you do it the better your memory will be.
It will eventually become automatic.
