did you try the line port on the pc?
This should work well.
have you adjusted the input levels in windows?
Start > Programs> Accessories> Entertainment >Volume Control
Once you open the volume control you may have to click on Options
>properties or Options >Advanced Controls and check off additional controls
so that you have available the port you are using.
What you are doing should work fine.
