Re: question about teaching and learning guitar (Master Musicians)

Oh, certainly. Knowing how to read standard notation isn't needed 24/7, but
it's always helpful. I always tell students that I'd like them to learn to
read music at least some. They don't have to turn into burning session
players, just need to read enough for me to write and example and have them
understand it.

I find TAB with rhythm stems and flags to be far more difficult to read than
standard notation. It's just messy as hell. And it's rarely done. If you're
going to learn what the 8th-note flags, the dots, the 16th-note flags, etc.
are, it's really particularly simple to learn the rest of it. I mean, line
or space, right? How difficult can *that* be?

That's why I like Guitar One and always try to get tabs made with Power Tab Editor. I prefer to see the notes. It's not just about able to read music but you can look at it for its composition value.
Tabs allow us to be imitators but we forget those who made those riffs are composers. We judge guitar players on the their technique but can you make up riffs like they do?

Reading music does open up a whole new world of literature. Last night I was experimenting with making a guitar version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. It would definitely take more than one guitar. I may mess with the intro and record each part separately.
The Paganini violin solos are fun to mess with too with some delay and distortion.
