Try using a computer based sequencer that allows you to program it
through notation. The computer will do exactly what you write. It is
a good way to practice because if you mess up you know. The problem
with just practicing writing notation on paper is that you already know
the tune, so when you play it back it is really difficult not to play
what is in your head instead of what is actually on the
paper...assuming you made mistakes. With a computer based sequencer
the computer will let you know every mistake you made by sounding like
shit.
Use a paper too, write on paper and then translate what you wrote to
test. Don't put in the computer and just keep fixing until it sounds
right...IMHO that isn't the best way to learn. Use the computer as a
testing platform for what you wrote. THEN debug it.
If you have a partner that knows how to read music very well you can
test on him/her; in the past I have used a teacher for this. If you
have a partner that is also learning they *can* be a test, but since
they could mess it up also it isn't necissarily a good one.
