Not really wanting to add to the argument in this thread, but one interesting word above that stands out in my mind is the word "master".

Is the musician really a "master" if he cannot read
music? I suppose people might use different definitions
for "master musician".

But I would think a "master" would have mastered written
music as well (read/write), otherwise he is less of
a master (others who can would be more "masterful").

This is quite different than discussing their
playing ability. I just question the use of the
word master in this particular context.
