There are probably some interesting and useful wiring options for a P/
J layout, including "isolating" each PUP, blend strategies, etc. You
have experience with adding preamps to Fender basses, if I remember
correctly; even without aftermarket preamps, etc., who knows what
could be found in the Fender parts list that might help make a killer
"special", once added to some good wood with a good finish on it.
Should be right up your alley, Rob.
Personally I like the idea of a P/J but I've always found problems with
it. The P is humbucking the J is single coil. They don't mix well for a
number of reasons. And like you suggest I sort of decided that an active
preamp to isolate the pickups and properly mix them is some kind of
answer (along with a decent side by side coil humbucker J) But then I
thought that going active sort of perverts the whole P/J idea. And that
then had me going back to passive ideas which has me going in circles on
the thing. But I agree with you that if someone were to run some
experiments on various combinations and find THE wiring and pickups to
do the job this would be THE bass to own. (assuming it had enough
strings which is yet another subject of cool basses that nobody wants to
make... And as for the Fender parts list there USED To be all sorts of
things you might need in there like 5 string P Pickups and 5 string
humbucking Js with decent tone...all gone apparently)
Ben,
Nordstrand makes a 5 string P bass pick up. It retails for $155.00. IF
you want one, e mail me at rschuh@xxxxxxxxxx
