He did whatever he needed to popularise his instruments, which is really
his genius. Nothing he did was technically a first, but, like Henry
Ford and the motor car, he made the instruments affordable, desirable
and common.

Not disagreeing with any of this, but I think on top of this Leo Fender
had some definite insight into how to build an electric bass that
*sounded* good. Consider that 1) after 60 years Fender is still
the standard to which every other electric bass is compared. Doesn't
necessarily mean it’s the "best" (always a matter of opinion) but
it is the reference and 2) Leo went on to play a key role in
designing two other highly-regarded basses, Music Man and
G&L.

That's funny! You can't seriously believe that every other bass is
compared to a Fender.

But they are. And not just any Fender. A Fender P.

There's just no comparison between a Fender and
(say) a Rick 4001 or a Spector Euro.

No, there is not. I've tried on multiple occasions just to
sub. in a Jazz, a Peavey Millenium and an OLP MM copy,
and was asked politely to get the dadgum P back on.

The pickups were garbage on the Jazz - maybe a good one, or
one with actives would have sold. But probably not.

That's not a knock on Fender. It's
just acknowledging how different the instruments are.

"The instruments" appear to have less utility than the lowly
P in my experience.
