Nice stuff, great players all, guys that I loved back in the '70s. But
I think you're muddying up the definition of "in the pocket," Clive.
In the recent thread about the "pocket," lots of folks seemed to think
it had something to do with playing a little bit ahead of or behind the
beat -- but this song is dead-on, straight-four, metronome-precise
on-the-beat.
I guess I agree with the definition of "in the pocket" this clip shows
-- it means the band is tight, locked in on the rhythm, playing as one
without effort. Nothing to do with ahead or behind the beat.
The more the pocket is talked about, the less of a chance you have of
going there. I have been told many times that I was in the pocket w/
a drummer. Was I? I thought we were just rockin' out and having
fun!
