Anyone care to recommend an electric bass starter pack, or just an instruments, that's small scale enough for a 9/10 year old? I've got a guitar student who's going to add electric bass because they're giving him that choice at his school.
Lots of "bass guitar pack" out there, but most of them look full-sized to me, which is to say they're medium or long scale - OK for me, not ok for someone 4' 10".
My view is that you'll give the young lad more challenge than he deserves by getting him a really cheap bass, starter pack or no.
I think you'd be better off getting him a higher-quality but used bass (same with the amp). If he loses interest fairly quickly, you can re-sell it and recover most of what you invested.
There's nothing that will turn off most beginners than an instrument that's difficult to play because it's not (or CAN'T be) properly set up. Go up a few notches in quality and you're much more likely to be able to make it easier for him to get started.
And yes, regardless of the quality of the instrument, DO allow for the cost of a setup when budgeting.
