What was the first ever bass line you transcribed, and can you still
play it to this day? Mine was "Have you ever seen the rain" - by CCR....
Transcribe? I still haven't ever bothered doing that.
I noticed a few others haven't, Derek - is this due to some people
committing to memory (without writing it down) as another way to
remember a tune?
I think for most of the people here who either don't read, or don't
read often/well the effort involved in transcribing is too great -
and
by the time we've gone through the tune often enough to have
transcribed it it is already in memory. Also, I think transcribing
is
one of those disciplines that come from formal training.
I find that sometimes I learn a tricky line (say the
solo to Sir Duke) but unless I play it regularly, I then have to go
back and remember it again, whereas by transcribing it, it aids the
process...
That's an interesting example. Those unison lines in Sir Duke
are quite tricky to learn by ear alone. Having the notation for that
really helped me work out how to play those. Even if I'd tried
transcribing I would almost certainly have completely messed
it up and my own transcriptions would have been absolutely no
use.
Now that I've learned those lines I think they are forever
embedded in muscle memory. And playing through them
without pain is a good indicator of how well my arm is healing.
I think Sir Duke is one of those tunes where learning to
play it makes you a better musician. There are pieces I've
learned that are more difficult to play, but no lightbulbs
came on in my head after (or while) learning them.
Has anyone else got a tune (or tunes) that did that for them?
