I don't think it's possible to take a fretless bass out of its case and
not have people *assume* that you're going to sound like Jaco.

Good point. I'd say very few, in fact I think it's always been the case
that very few non-musicians have every heard of Jaco. Maybe a higher
number of Jazz afficionados or Joni Mitchell fans, but even among those
groups I'd say fairly few.
Which is why I specified taking the bass out of the case - that usually
happens when there are musicians about (it is already out of the case
when one walks on stage).
But I think you're right, even among musicians only bass players that
read books about bass players probably know who Jaco is. I think I'll
take the fretless along to rehearsal tomorrow and see what the different
age groups say. It's not a Jazz band (general covers) and the age range
spans probably 30 years - except we're not really playing anything
fretless friendly.
