I played a multi-band charity gig this past weekend on an outdoor
stage at a large local club. 40 minute sets. The sound guy miked the
drums and two guitar amps and handed me a DI box. The following
discussion is paraphrased:

Him: "Run through this."
Me: "My amp has a really good post-EQ DI. I'd rather use that."
Him: "But if your amp dies I'll lose your signal."
Me: "It won't die. I only use good gear. If your DI box dies we'll
both lose my signal."
Him: "I've been doing sound here for ten years and nobody's ever had a
problem going direct."
Me: "No soundman has ever forced me to bypass my amp. I am always able
to use my amp's DI. Your DI would be pre-EQ, which will not give me
the tone I want."
Him: "You still have your amp. You'll still hear your tone."
Me: "But the audience won't, and that's all that matters."

The discussion never got heated and I gave in because the gig wasn't
important (except for the charity bit).

It annoys me that the guitarists are always allowed to use their amps
and get the tone they want, but the bass can "just plug into this," as
if all basses sound the same. All soundmen want me to use a DI box,
until I say that my amp has a good DI already (I use Eden or MarkBass
amps). This is the first time a sound guy didn't want me to use my
amp's DI.

Plus, his logic made no sense. What if my amp fails?!? What if the
GUITAR amps fail? They're not going direct. Plus, I have never seen
any piece of equipment fail more often than club-owned DI boxes.

One of our local clubs has a sound guy who keeps telling me that his
all-time favorite bass player is Aston Barrett. It's obvious. Every band
that plays in this place end up sounding like Aston Barrett is on bass. I
like a fat reggae bass sound when appropriate, but does it always have to
sound that way, no matter what band is on stage?
