Re: New amplifier...

Anyway, the Ten2 is great. My only two gripes are that my Wal basses
overload the pre-amp in a strange woofly kind of way, and the speaker
cable to the internal speaker has to be removed for transport.

AI has fantastic customer service and tech support, even if you're the
second or third owner and/or it's a few years after the amp was made.
I'd give them a call or send an email via the link on their site,
mention what you've experienced, and they will, without a doubt, do
their best to try to help you understand what's happening, why, and what
you can do about it.

I tried turning down the master volume inside the Wal basses and
fiddling with the bass boost and got it working well enough, but then
I realised I could just plug the Wals into the effects loop 'return'
instead of the normal input - the return has a level control so it's
not much different from using the normal input. After returning the
Wals to normal 'hot' output with the bass boost up full they now sound
absolutely great - better than ever. Intruigingly it copes with all
my other active basses perfectly well, including the electric upright
which I thought would be most likely to stretch the combo -
especially the low B with the bass control turned up - which it copes
with effortlessly.

My take on what you're describing goes back to input level - the first
inputs are designed to accept mic outputs, which can be very low, while
the effects return probably expects a higher signal level. Could be an
impedance thing, too - if you understand that sort of thing more than I
do, you could read the tech specs and see what the difference is.

My Ten2 is due for delivery here today - I'm excited! I was listening
to my son and his friends playing here in the house last night, my son
playing my MIM Precision through my current AI setup - it sounded
absolutely fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to it sounding even
better as of later today.
