Volume control

First off where is JS?
When I post something I expect a negative remark from him.
I feel slighted if he doesn't reply.
I wanted to bring up 'volume' on an electric bass.
Most players set the volume control all the way up on a bass and
adjust the amp accordingly.
Why?
I set the volume on my bass near the middle and adjust the amp
accordingly.
I am a thumb player and I play hard.
At higher bass volumes I am not happy with my sound.
It either distorts or there is just no punch.
Amps sound best when pushed (but not to the point of distortion)
especially tube amps.
With the bass volume set lower I can play hard and get a good punchy
sound.
Plus it gives me some headroom when I need it.
How do you set your bass volume?
