Today was a new one, even for me. I took a few subA local jazz fanatic, by profession a carpenter, took on a
gigs with a local cover band, who promptly fired the
singer after I accepted the gigs, and she was the only
person I knew or liked from the band.
This morning I got a call at 8:23 AM, which is the
middle of the night for me. It was the band leader, who I
am playing with on Sunday. He asks if I can do another
sub gig next Saturday; now, I know my schedule is not
normal, but I think that's pretty early for anybody to
call about a gig that's a week away. I told him I didn't
have my calendar (on account of being asleep) and I'd get
back to him later.
Then he tells me the real reason he's calling is
because he needs to get me a revised set list for Sunday,
to make sure I'm ready for all the songs the new singer
wants to sing. Like I might freeze up on the stage if
somebody calls out Pink Cadillac and I wasn't ready.
Well, I tell him, fine, email them to me, and he responds
"Okay I will, but it's really early and I'm not even
completely awake right now, so I'm going to wait until
later when I'm not so tired."
I've never had somebody wake me up just to tell me it's
too early to send a set list for a gig that's 2 days away.
What's the strangest gig-related call you've ever had?

village pub way out in the sticks and turned it into a jazz
venue.
Money appeared to be no problem...I supplied the sound
system
and he went for the top option gear.
He booked local bands and Big Names from London and worked
really hard at promoting the place every which way.
It didn't take off and we would turn up and play to an
audience
of 6 people on average so clearly he was losing money hand
over fist.
We were booked for a gig...I got a phone call from him
about 6 pm.
'Sorry Clive but the gig is off'
'What's the problem?'
'Well...I'm just climbing down a ladder out of the back
window
'cos the Bailiffs are breaking down the front door...I'm
off.'
I managed to contact the other guys and stop them making
the trip.
We never saw him again but did hear that he owed everyone
from
the brewery to the tax man huge amounts.
Shame...he really tried hard...but that's jazz for ya!!
It is'nt just jazz, I have lots of horror stories of gigs of
various genres, it's an ongoing thing for me. I try to
protect myself by demanding a basic upfront fee but even then
I feel guilty if it's obvious the takings don't cover the
expense of a band.
